Visual Communication 2:2

Using a scalpel, I cut out the text of one of my images I edited on Photoshop in the previous lesson. Once I completed that, I went along to where students were shining light through the images. This created a shadow on the wall that emphasised the parts that had been cut out due to the light shining through. Compositionally, I think the paper being in the shot works really well. This made me think to research artists that use this technique regularly and I came across Adam Frank. He creates cut-out pieces of art and emits the shadows by placing them in front of a candle. I enjoyed the various ways I could make my text look by altering the position I place it in front of the light.

Screen printing

 Today I screen printed my chosen edited photograph in numerous different colours on paper and fabric. I plan to collage onto the images to create alternate pieces of work. I am going to sew and glue some things and draw and paint onto them accordingly. This way of working links back to the work of Robert Rauschenburg which I researched during my fine are classes. Like what I am doing, he revolved his work around the time and era of which he created it. Another artist I like and feel like I can relate to is Sigmund Polke. His work is very illustrative. He has bold designs above colourful bold and simplistic backgrounds, both contrasting yet complementing each other.

I enjoyed learning how to screen print and it will become a useful skill for me to use in the near future.

The Caravan Gallery

The Carvan Gallery visited Blackburn today, the photographers go around the country and snap pictures of every day people in every day life. It linked to the talk we had previously about the context of art. There is more to art than just drawing, painting or taking a photograph. There is always an idea or thought behind a creation regardless of whether it is simple or complex. There are different purposes, messages and reasons why artists do the things they do and sometimes we don't always consider that.

Visual Communication 1:1

In the afternoon, we moved on to Visual Communication. I used Photoshop to edit my photographs in a way which will allow me to proceed to print screening on Thursday. I edited my photos using the threshold technique. This changes an image immediately to contrasting with black and white which will make it easy for me to screen print them. Techniques like that link to pop art artist like Andy Warhol who created bold and striking images and was known for print making. I also learnt a technique which made an image linear in order for me to easily cut sections out when printed.
